Gill Hewitt responds to ancient landscapes and sites of ritual. Visiting Cornish standing stones such as the Merry Maidens, Men an Tol and Lanyon’s Quoit, she will begin with stillness. She takes her time with the place, connecting to the currents of spiritual history. Hewitt will research the sites before she visits them, absorbing their folklore.

This research and her personal response to place, inform her paintings. Her work reimagines these ancient stories, bringing them to life with paint and paper. The vibrant colours are inspired by the sites; they might have been a small element, a shining yellow gorse bush or a fiery leaf seen from the corner of her eye, but they become a large part of Hewitt’s palette.
